It is possible to mount a hydra booster in any position it will not affect the operation.
Standard position for Tallon booster is accumulator bottle on right as you face the booster from the master cylinder side this is the most popular position. Second most popular position is to rotate the booster counter clock wise 90 degrees accumulator bottle up this requires a relocation plate. Third most popular location is rotated 180 accumulator bottle on left hose inlets up. Forth position is rotated 270 degrees accumulator bottle down hoses on engine side this also requires a relocation plate.
In order to use a recovered booster with Tallon mounting plates look at booster from the input piston side or fire wall side the key should be on the right or 3 o clock position
In recent years due to the use of Bendix boosters by Chrysler and other manufactures boosters have been keyed to specific applications. The reason for this is to stop the booster installers from recycling units from salvage yards. Each unit from a different application will require a custom relocation plate to match the key location. In other words a custom off set relocation plate between the booster and the master cylinder to locate the master cylinder level from right to left.
Many of our customers have become aware of this fact after they have purchased a booster and are trying to find the rest of the components for there system.
Another potential problem that has raised some concern with safety is to not use a key location on the booster at all. At Tallon we strongly disagree with this practice. Although the mounting nut has serrated face and bites in to an aluminum or steel mounting plate and has a C clip to keep the nut from coming off. The key location is the only thing that keeps your booster in location and stops it from rotating in the mounting plate should your mounting nut come loose. With out a key this could cause a catastrophic brake failure. Motor sports are ever changing as far as horsepower vibration and pure punishment that racers street rodders and off roaders use there vehicles for. We want to help you build a safe system break it if you must but live to fix it.
Boost levels of the hydra boost
Although this is tech talk section I’m going to take a general stand and don’t want to get in to discussion about pressures and so on. So on a scale of 1 the lowest thru10 the highest.
Disc/drum units are set at a 6/7 level of boost for disc/drum this gives a very good performance trough a wide verity of components calipers and rotor drums wheel cylinders.
Disc/disc units are set at a 6/7 level of boost for disc/disc this gives a very good performance trough a wide verity of components calipers and rotors.
So what’s the difference? Over all the disc/drum unit puts out less pressure to the master cylinder this protects the braking components.
Just as the disc /disc puts out more pressure to components that are engineered to take more pressure such as calipers and rotors in a four wheel disc brake system.
Never use a disc /disc booster on a disc/drum application.
Painting the booster
Our boosters are clear coated to protect from rust.
Customers ask if they can paint the booster? The answer is yes to prep the booster simply wipe down all surfaces with acetone. Leave all ports covered with protective covers do not paint in side of master cylinder flange and power piston end.
For best results use enamel paint test lacquer on a small area it may require more cleaning or removal of clear with acetone.
Pluming the booster
From the high pressure out of the power steering pump line goes to the 18mmx1.5 high pressure inlet of the booster. From the high pressure out let of the booster 16mmx1.5 line goes to the steering box high pressure inlet. The outlet port from the steering box is low pressure and returns to the power steering pump or it goes to a reserve and then to the pump. The last port from the booster is a low pressure port that may be routed to ether the low pressure return line to the pump or to the reserve. Note if you have a reserve it would be best to plum the line there first.
Booster High Pressure Hydraulic Line
Hoses must be rated at 1500 PSI working pressure minimum10.000 PSI burst pressure.
You can have your local hydraulic hose company build hoses to your specs using what ever hose ends you require. This can be more expensive than what you can build your self using products from our web site. Stainless steel braided hose is much better in looks, strength, heat resistance, and are easy to make with common hand tools. Hacksaw end wrenches and some tape are all that’s required.
Booster low Pressure Lines
Low pressure lines may be made from 3/8 neoprene hose and plumed in to low pressure power steering pump return lines. Booster comes with 3/8 bib for this hose all that is needed is a 3/8 barbed hose tee.
This may be up graded to use stainless steel braided line to give that extra finished look.
